About
Volcanology, and specifically recruiting for a project on satellite remote sensing of volcanic sulfur dioxiode emissions
Research Area
I am a volcanologist with broad and interdisciplinary interests in volcanic processes, hazards and impacts. My main areas of research have been volcanic gas geochemistry and the far-field societal impacts of past large eruptions.
Project Interests
I am recruiting for a project in collaboration with the Etna Observatory (part of the Italian national institute of geophysics and volcanology) that aims to develop AI-enabled methodologies for the retrieval, validation, and scientific exploitation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) observations from the Sentinel-5P polar and the Sentinel-4 geostationary missions. In particular, the new Sentinel-4 mission provides an unprecedented capability for high-temporal-resolution monitoring of atmospheric composition over Europe, enabling continuous observations of volcanic gas emissions and significantly improving the understanding of volcanic processes and their interactions with the atmosphere. By combining complementary satellite observations with machine learning techniques and ground-based monitoring data, the project will improve the accuracy, temporal continuity, and scientific exploitation of volcanic gas datasets with applications in volcanology and atmospheric science.
I am also pleased to discuss other project ideas with potential applicants.
