Please remember that, although you may see later dates by which you can apply to enter the course, the deadline for funding by the NERC Doctoral Landscape Award (and for consideration for research areas listed by the DLA) for 2025 entry is early January (exact date TBC) at noon.

If you wish to devise your own research project you should also submit a short research proposal which you should already have discussed with one of our staff members.

The British Antarctic Survey is a component of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and has, for over 50 years, undertaken the majority of Britain’s scientific research on and around the Antarctic continent. The recent focus of BAS science has been on using polar knowledge and data to address scientific questions of significant global relevance including studies of past climate using ice cores and other archives, studies of the ecological effects of climate change, work on the stability of theWest Antarctic Ice Sheet and its implications for sea level, and studies of Southern Ocean ecosystems and their implications for sustainable food resources. More recently, the location of research has widened with attention also devoted to the Southern Ocean, South Atlantic and the Arctic.

BAS was a founder member of the Cambridge Centre for Climate Science and is an institute that is geographically focussed but by its nature highly interdisciplinary, with research spanning topics including glaciology, climatology and palaeoclimatology, atmospheric physics and chemistry, geology and geophysics, upper atmosphere science, physical oceanography, marine and terrestrial ecology, biodiversity and evolution.
