Other details about postgraduate training in Earth Sciences are on the department website.

Earth Sciences at Cambridge is one of the leading Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences department in the UK and consistently ranks in the top 5 globally.

It provides a diverse research environment with critical mass across a wide range of geological science research areas. These include major research groups in geophysics, petrology and volcanology, palaeoclimate science, palaeobiology and mineral sciences with much of the research crossing the boundaries between these disciplines. The Department has a particularly strong reputation for quantitative research, reflected by the establishment and hosting of the cross-departmental BP Institute (multi-phase flow) and collaborations/co-appointments with the departments of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics, Physics, and Materials Science and Metallurgy. Earth Sciences plays a central role in cross-departmental research including climate-change (Cambridge Centre for Climate Science), CCS research (Cambridge Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage, C4S) and environmental materials and minerals sciences research.
